There’s Magic in the Telling – Writing is Good for Your Health

Creating a record of your life for loved ones is a wonderful goal. Being published is fun and occasionally profitable, but writing memoir for yourself may be the best reason to write.

Researchers have found that writing about your life and sharing it with others isn’t just enjoyable, it can improve your health.

Dr. James W. Pennebaker, a professor in the Department of Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin,found that participants in his focused writing study had lower blood pressure, went to the doctor less frequently and had fewer absences from work.  College students earned better grades and senior professionals who had been laid off got new jobs more quickly after writing. “People who are given the opportunity to write about emotional upheavals have changes in immune function,” Pennebaker says.

Writing about turbulent, exciting, or sentimental times gives the writer a chance to explore old thoughts and feelings from a new perspective.  Finding meaning in those experiences transforms them into wisdom. Having those stories heard by a supportive listener (or listeners, or just yourself) reminds the reader that his or her life history matters.

Many people want to write but don’t know how to start. They worry about finessing spelling and punctuation before they’ve had a chance to explore their stories. Or, they allow doubts and fears to stop them before they start. My writing workshops and classes are designed to overcome these obstacles. Using creative writing exercises and positive feedback, I coax my student’s timid creative selves out to play.

Mosaic artist Jane Kelly in her studio, photo by Stacey DennickI’m so pleased to have just about completed mosaic artist Jane Kelly’s new website and blog.  She needed a site that showcases her beautiful work, and is easy for her to update with photos and information about where and when she’ll be selling her mosaic pieces.

I suggested WordPress site for its ease of use, and the SEO (search engine optimization) provided by a blog.   When you blog, Google and all the other search engines notice, even if no humans read your blog.  That’s how you get found in online searches.

Of course people will check out her site, so I took some photos of Jane in her studio.  Seeing a face and a place helps patrons connect with the artist.    After the shoot, Jane said, “Thanks for making it fun.”  I specialize in putting people at ease so we can get quick and painless headshots.  I also like to take shots of art in progress, to show all the work that goes into each piece.

This is particularly useful in my husband Leland Dennick’s case, as fused glass and glass casting are so technically complex and difficult to explain.ldcastingbamboo600

Etsy shop makeover

Has anyone not heard of online craft and vintage superstore Etsy by now?  Photographs sell products on Etsy.  Descriptions help.  If you don’t have strong photos, you won’t have strong sales, or get into galleries, fairs or heaven.  Okay, you might still get into heaven, but not artist nirvana.

Artist Susan Wosk enlisted my help to transform her Etsy shop.  She paints Mexican picture frames and fills them with whimsical images. They’re three dimensional, tin wall niches with protective glass over the pictures. Very fun, and also very challenging to photograph. Many cameras can’t focus correctly on glass. Plus, the reflections that make glass so beautiful can create glare, hot spots or confusing reflections.  But not to fear, my Canon T3 camera is here, uh, there!

Holy Nichos!  Pansy garden frameHere’s the old photo of the pansy flower frame.  It’s colorful and focused with no glare or hot spots (easier said than done) but the background is too cluttered and it would look better lighter (IMHO).

For the new photo I used white foamcore for the background (no ironing required), propped the frame up with a small bowl so it wouldn’t look distorted, and shot it with a large f stop for better depth of field.

I still had to take some blue out of the background and up the saturation in Photoshop, but it only took a couple of minutes.

I think you’ll agree it’s a much cleaner, more professional photo.

I like white backgrounds because they really let the product stand out without adding colors.  In the next example the turquoise tablecloth made the top of the sacred heart nicho look turquoise, rather than the green it really is. That could upset someone who bought it sight unseen, over the internet.

For the new shot, rather than shooting head on, I tilted the nicho to create a diagonal line that draws the eye and adds a sense of movement.

“Ardor in the Alley” classics and monsters by Stacey Alysa Dennick

A winner in Copperfield’s Books fall 2009 writing contest. The challenge, mix classics and monsters (as in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) in 300 words or less.


Ardor in the Alley

A shoddy carriage pulled by a swaybacked nag trotted past Madame Bovary and Leon.

“Must we go out?” She asked. They had but six more hours before she had to return to her tedious husband.

“Emma, my love,” Leon said, tucking a lock of dark hair behind her ear. “A man needs fuel to feed his passion.” His eyes glinted in the dark of the alley as he bent to kiss her.

A booted foot rang out on the cobblestones, compelling them to draw apart.

The man approached, silhouetted against the low moon, his cloak billowing behind him, although there was no wind. Emma shuddered and drew her own cape tighter.

Suddenly the stranger stood by Leon, his eyes preternaturally bright. His full mouth lifted into a smile, revealing fangs as sharp as lion’s claws. Emma’s mouth fell open, but no sound came out. Her treacherous legs could barely support her. Leon tilted his head back slowly as if in invitation. The stranger pulled him close and sank in his wicked teeth. Leon moaned. The stranger’s answering groans mingled with a hideous slurping, sucking sound.

Jealousy burned hot in Emma’s breast. A banshee’s shriek escaped her lips. In one smooth movement she pulled a knife from her boot and slashed it against the stranger’s hamstrings. She might be small, but she knew where to strike. He staggered back, dropping Leon. Emma plunged the blade again and again, until she and the stranger were both soaked in blood. Only then did she turn to Leon. The stranger laughed, his wounds had completely healed.

“Such enchanting fire,” he said, grabbing Emma and drawing her to his chest. “I shall take you as my companion.”

“Just My Luck” memoir by Stacey Alysa Dennick

crashing waveThe warm ocean undulates between sets of six-foot swells.  I swim naked except for one fin, loaned to me by one of a dozen body surfers here at Hanakapiai beach, on Kauai’s rustic North shore.  I’m proud to be the only woman in the water.  This is the bravest, most athletic thing I’ve ever done.  I just learned to swim three years earlier, at the age of seventeen.

As a kid I could only dog paddle.  I circumnavigated swimming pools clinging to their sides like a crab, fearful of rough housing children who might accidentally drown me.

In high school I liked to brag that I was captain of the apathy team.  Any game involving an inflatable orb still brings out the sour loser in me.  But after living in Hawaii for a year I’ve acquired a taste for the outdoors, especially playing in the push and tug of the sea.

My friends Judy and Sally, who hiked the two miles into this valley with me, are too cautious to enter these massive rollers.  They work on their all-over tans on the nude side of the long beach.

I’m not a particularly skilled or strong swimmer.   I just like to fool around in the waves, catching a short ride under a curving blue crest, sliding off the back before it breaks on shore in sandy, pounding chaos.  Sometimes I dive under a forming wave, rather than riding it, so that I can imagine myself a sleek mermaid dolphin seal nymph sea creature.  I love the feeling of weightlessness, the sensual slide of warm water over skin, especially without bathing suit straps pulling on my neck, or bottoms that creep and crawl.

I’m getting tired, and these waves are honestly a bit too much for me.  I catch a wave hoping that it will bring me to shore, but it only takes me half way, a dangerous place to hang out.  I paddle out to the break line again, catch another halfway wave, turn around and go back again.  The next wave takes me halfway yet again, but I stay there.  There’s someone near me, so I figure it’s okay.  Verdant spires surround us, sliced horizontally by the rust-colored Kalalau trail.  Another two miles up the valley, there’s a waterfall that I’ve never been to.  The ocean recedes.  It’s noticeably shallower, the color lighter.  I should hasten out to sea towards the gathering power.  I look at my fellow bodysurfer, who remains calmly in place.  When I look back at the ocean, a huge, dark blue wall of water curves over my head.

“What do we do?” I ask in a panic.

“Dive under,” he says, launching his slender torso expertly into the bottom of the wave.

I dive in a moment later, at too shallow an angle, my one fin insufficient to propel me out of danger.  I’m pummeled by an endless stream of punishing water which flips me head over heels, pelts me with sand, twists me around.  This is what surfers call being “washing machined.”  It feels exactly like what I imagine cartoon cats experience when they’re inadvertently thrown in with the dirty laundry.  But it’s not funny.  I’m stunned and scared.  I know struggling is pointless, so I try to relax.  I’m violently bumped and tumbled for a long time.  No life review plays in my head.  This seems like a good sign that death isn’t imminent.

Then it occurs to me that I no longer know which way is up.  Fear seizes me, but I make my best guess and start swimming, flailing through the foaming turmoil.  I worry my lungs might implode at any minute, or that I might be forced to breathe underwater, like in a dream, but it won’t be magically okay.  I swim on for what seems like miles, suspended in frothy confusion.  Suddenly breaking the surface, I lift my head to blessed air, sucking in a desperate gasping breath.


Shaking the bangs out of my eyes, I scan the horizon.  Another powerful breaker curls ahead, ready to pounce.  My lungs are still hungry, but there’s not enough time.  I propel myself down.  Underwater, I feel the force of the wave push me towards shore, in the opposite direction of my dive.  Up again, gasp, dive under.  Never enough air.  Relax.  Don’t waste energy.  I’m being pushed towards shore, but not to the sandy beach.  The ocean is going to smash me onto wicked black lava rocks!  Abandoning the relaxation strategy, I swim clumsily away from the boulders, parallel to the beach, still ducking waves and gasping for air.

At last the breakers deposit me onto the shore.  I crawl up the beach, wheezing loudly, to rest on the sand at the water’s edge.  My mind screams at me. You’re such an idiot!  Who do you think you are going out there with real surfers? 

Solid ground is a comfort.  The sun warms my back, non-judgmental.

I become aware of eyes on me.  A family of tourists stares at me with dropped jaws.  Oh, shit!  I’ve washed up on the non-nude side of the beach.  These small-minded prudes have obviously never seen a colossal naked half-drowned washing machine survivor.  I stupidly look around for cover, as if a sarong might have washed up alongside me.  All I have is one fin, which I remove, considering how much of me it could cover.  Given no alternative, I assume an actor’s mask of superiority and pull myself up to my best “Yes, I’m over six feet tall” posture.  I undertake the long trek back to the nude side of the beach with as much wobbly-legged dignity as I can muster, the fin dangling by my side.

It took a week for me to get rid of the sand imbedded in my hair and ears.  Thirty years later I haven’t lost my respect for the ocean, or my sense of puny vulnerability.  I did however, lose interest in all-over tanning and develop a fondness for bathing suits.

“Lessons” memoir by Stacey Alysa Dennick

Yambo was wiry, quick, dark mahogany; always neatly dressed in button down shirts and khaki shorts. He had a handsome oval face, large round eyes, a fast mouth and mean hands. Yambo was just a little nine-year-old, but he was already big trouble. He didn’t do his homework, despite the fact that his father was a high-ranking governmental official here in West Africa. Worse, he was violent. Yambo would punch you or hurt you at the slightest provocation. One time he cut in front of me in line. I started to raise my arm in protest, whimpering for the teacher to witness this outrage of protocol. He challenged me in French.

“Did I do something?”

“Non, non.” I groveled, but he socked me hard in the stomach anyway.

My sister and I were in Africa because our mother’s former college sweetheart, who she hadn’t set eyes on in twenty years, had proposed in a letter. He was a diplomat who specialized in French-speaking Africa. Libreville, Gabon, exactly on the equator in West Africa, was our home from 1966-1968.  Boarding school was out of the question, so despite our two-year age difference, my sister and I were enrolled in the same class of École Mixte, the local public elementary school. About 95% of the student body consisted of black Africans, the rest (with the exception of a couple of American girls) were French. School was taught in French, and I was utterly lost. Since I was in a grade higher than I should have been in American school, I couldn’t even do the math. Only our tutor saved me from academic disaster. While I failed at school every day for the first year, my homework was always perfect.

Yambo sat in the back row of class with the older boys who had been repeatedly failed.  But when the teacher dropped her pencil, Yambo always rushed forward and picked it up before anyone else. He was even faster than the teacher’s pet Philippe, the goody-goody French boy who sat in the front row. All the kids had resented Philippe since the time the teacher’s ruler went missing, and she kept the entire class in from recess except for him.

One day, a burley African man dressed in a dark suit come to our class. The head teacher, an older French woman who never smiled, called Yambo to the front of the room. Strangely, he had none of his usual cockiness. He looked small and scared, then wild and frantic. The teacher explained that this was Yambo’s punishment for fighting and being disobedient. The grim man brandished an Indiana Jones style bullwhip as he led Yambo outside the classroom.  We heard muted thwacks, and sharp cries of pain. Yambo hobbled back to his desk, where he wept quietly, his head slumped over his unfinished work. Everyone avoided looking at him. I felt righteous vengeance, then pity, and then fear; someone would pay for this humiliation. Yambo would never accept punishment. Silent tension filled the room of sixty odd kids, each of us wondering if we were next.

I’d been unfairly reprimanded for innocent scholastic and linguistic errors. The African teacher my sister and I called “The Nasty Teacher,” because she always wore skimpy dresses that showed her bra straps, had taken away my Petit Larrousse French-English dictionary, implying (erroneously) that I planned to use it to cheat.  Another time, the entire class gapped in horror when I accidentally addressed the teacher as tu, the familiar form of “you” that I used all day long with my classmates. They didn’t understand that “you” was just “you” in English. Surely these offenses didn’t warrant a beating?

It was my nemesis, tough, mean Solange who was called forward.  She was an African girl who wore ugly old dresses and loved nothing more than making me cry.  During my African captivity Solange tormented and teased me daily, calling me la mouche tsé-tsé (“tsetse fly”) and grand cheval (“big horse”).  No scholar herself, she delighted in my language struggles, my hopeless battle with spelling. Now she’d get what she deserved.

The severe French teacher brought out a cat of nine tails, a wooden stick with leather strips. It struck Solange’s calves with a sickening whack, whack, whack. Solange danced vainly back and forth, sobbing and trying to escape the blows. My anger melted into pity and then empathy. After five minutes Solange was sent back to her desk where she sobbed hysterically, red welts rising on her legs. The class sat united in shock, fear and revulsion. While it was true that we were unusually sober and attentive that afternoon, I doubt that anyone learned much math or history. The main lesson that day was on the cruelty of authority.

The next day my sister and I learned that the man who had whipped Yambo was his very own father.

Perhaps Yambo had what we now call “learning disabilities.” Maybe he was dyslexic or had ADD or was just the kind of kinesthetic person who was doomed to fail in a system that only valued academic achievement. Whatever his problems were, giving Yambo a public beating was like treating a bad case of poison oak with a blow torch.

A month later Yambo disappeared from school. My girlfriend Natalie, a quiet French girl, was also missing. When she finally returned, she had a thick scar on the back of her right calf, from her ankle to her knee, like the seam of old-fashioned nylon hose.

“Yambo cut me and another girl with a piece of broken glass,” she told me in a flat voice.  The wound must have required fifty stitches.
“He is never coming back.”

A winner in the Pacific Sun’s annual “Freeway Fiction” contest. Entries had to be exactly 101 words in length (excluding title).

Car Karma

I stop at the yellow light as it turns red.  In the car behind me, hands are thrown up in disgust.  Turning onto Franklin Street enveloped in classical music the screech of a skidding car intrudes.  Thunk, crunch, whoah!  My Honda rotates in a gentle 180-degree arc on the rain slick pavement.  On the sidewalk a grey haired woman mouths, “Are you okay?”
My car points at traffic.  U-turn, parallel park, a crowd coagulates.  Concerned faces peer.
“Are you okay?”  Dazed, I let the other driver hug me.
“I’m okay.”
How can I explain the damage to my faith in justice?
